St. Marguerite D’Youville Academy Wins Trophy
for Academic Excellence.

This year the Ogdensburg Kiwanis Club wanted to do something for our local youth to encourage them in their studies. They sponsored a competition with all the schools in Ogdensburg, Heuvelton, Lisbon and Morristown. Each school was given percentage points for students improving each marking period, those involved in chorus and band, student’s who had their art displayed at Remington or a gallery, those who read the most books and fulfilled the requirements of the school’s reading incentive programs, and an essay competition where the students had to interview someone over 55 and write an essay about that person. When all the points were tallied the winner was St. Marguerite D’Youville Academy in Ogdensburg. The students from SMDA that were recognized in the essay competition were Brogan LaRose for Grade 4, Lizzy Peo for Grade 5 and Bridget Paige for Grade 6.
On Tuesday, June 19th, Mr. Bill Merna, from the Ogdensburg Kiwanis Club arrived at St. Marguerite’s with the huge trophy that Kiwanis had made for the competition. SMDA will be engraved on the plate as the first winner of the Kiwanis Academic Excellence Competition. The school was treated to slushy drinks and cookies at an assembly. Mr. Merna congratulated the students and the teachers for all their hard work and accomplishment as this year’s school of Academic Excellence.  The trophy will be proudly displayed at St. Marguerite’s for the upcoming school year. Celina Burns, the school’s principal was elated when she received the notification that SMDA had won the competition. She commends the teachers and students, but not to forget the parents who have sacrificed, so their children can have a Catholic School Education. Our parents are instrumental in encouraging their children to do their very best and for that the school is grateful. Kudos to our entire school family!!
A very special thanks to the Ogdensburg Kiwanis for caring enough about our young people to promote and encourage them in their school work. It does take a whole village to raise a child and the Kiwanis Club is truly doing their part!!

Bishop LaValley Visits St. James School in Gouveneur
It is always an exciting time when the Bishop visits.  Bishop LaValley places the visiting of our Catholic School high on his priority list.  In the pictures below he is seen celebrating an Advent Liturgy with the children of St. James.  After Mass, he joined the students for their Christmas gift of song to the village at the local coffee shop.  The Bishop also visited the children and teachers back at St. James.
