With the May 26 installation of Bishop Cunningham as the Tenth Bishop of Syracuse, the See of Ogdensburg is sede vacante. On May 28, the Diocesan College of Consultors elected Father Terry R. LaValley to serve as the Diocesan Administrator. He will be the caretaker of the Diocese until the appointment of a new Bishop.
This is a special time of prayer for the diocesan community, much like that of the first believers who prayed for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on their community. To this end, the following prayer suggestion is offered for your use:
Prayer for a New Bishop
Almighty Father,
for one hundred thirty-seven years you have sent
to the Church of Ogdensburg shepherds after your own heart.
Send forth the Holy Spirit upon Pope Benedict,
that he might choose for us a new Bishop,
full of courage in preaching the Gospel,
wisdom in governing the Church,
and zeal in leading us in the paths of holiness.
Grant to the man you will send to us
the protection of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception,
our Mother and our Patroness.
We make this prayer through her Son,
Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
